Interventions Issues for Children with Autism

Following a child’s diagnosis, the next questions parents usually ask are about the optimal services for their child to promote communication, social, cognitive and behavioral development. The recommendations of various teachers, therapists, physicians and psychologists is often confusing and can be a bit intimidating. In these articles, I have attempted to lay out some important information for parents and practitioners about various intervention approaches. This section will be expanded in the coming months. Assumptions behind developmental and behavioral interventions are discussed as well as naturalistic or sometimes called “incidental” teaching approaches. THe use of visual schedules and particular challenges of non-verbal children are discussed.
